Dolphin Encounters on a Whale Watching Tour \u201cJust Around the Corner\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

As part of Ocean Week, the 5th-grade students were treated to an unforgettable whale watching tour \u2014 an experience that left a lasting impression. After an informative introductory talk by Ricarda Scholz at the M.E.E.R. exhibition, the group set off under clear skies and perfect weather conditions for the Atlantic waters off the southern coast of La Gomera.<\/p>\n\n

Guided by Captain Noel and marine guide Nicole from the OCEANO Whale Watching team, the nearly three-hour trip was filled with enthusiasm, expertise, and a deep respect for the ocean. Nicole shared her years of knowledge about marine mammals and ecosystems, giving the children valuable insights into her daily work. Captain Noel explained how to approach marine animals with care and respect, offering the group a fascinating glimpse into the responsibilities of ethical boating. The ocean did not disappoint: the children were lucky enough to witness pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, a hammerhead shark, and a loggerhead sea turtle in the wild \u2014 encounters that are far from ordinary. While observing the pilot whales, the boat\u2019s engine was switched off, and thanks to a hydrophone, the group was able to hear the whales\u2019 calls live on board \u2014 a magical and moving moment that brought the underwater world vividly to life.<\/p>\n\n

Another especially touching moment came when the crew rescued a weakened Bulwer\u2019s petrel found helplessly floating on the surface. Carefully brought on board, the bird was later picked up in port by specialists and taken to a rescue center for care and examination \u2014 a powerful, real-life example of active wildlife and nature conservation.This outing was the highlight of an extraordinary week full of discovery and learning, showing the children that a rich diversity of whales, dolphins, and other incredible sea creatures lives right next door.<\/p>\n\n
