In one of the groups, containing a large number of calves (which is typical in springtime), we observed a young animal showing an <b>extrordinarily swollen genital area<\/b>. The reasons for this phenomenon were not known. Luckily, we managed to photograph the animal during aerial behaviours.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Comparable cases reported<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_2577\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2577\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2577\" src=\"https:\/\/m-e-e-r.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/af72449a4d.jpg\" alt=\"(c) Denise Herzing\" width=\"200\" height=\"98\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(c) Denise Herzing<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>For comparison,<\/strong> the image on the right side represents an <strong>adult female spotted dolphin<\/strong> showing the typical swelling of the genital area <strong>during lactation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After posting this information to the international cetology email discussion group <strong>MARMAM<\/strong>, we have received a multitude of comments as well as a <strong>variety of ideas and diagnoses<\/strong>. Similar observations were described, involving several spotted dolphin calves in the <strong>Azores<\/strong> and a juvenile\/young adult male <strong>grey seal<\/strong> in Cornwall (UK).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Many possible diagnoses<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_2578\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2578\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2578\" src=\"https:\/\/m-e-e-r.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/d014f1a102.jpg\" alt=\"Fleckendelfinkalb vor den Azoren (c) Lisa Steiner und Kegelrobbe (unten) (c) Simon Bone, Cornwall Seal Group\" width=\"200\" height=\"108\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(c) Lisa Steiner<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Potential reasons for the abnormal swelling in the spotted dolphin calf included the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>congenital umbilical hernia<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>congested mammary glands<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>a \u201cgood slam\u201d causing internal swelling and hemorrhage<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>rudimentary hind limbs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>some type of tumour<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>parasitic\/bacterial infection (crassicauda, brucella, etc.)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>contaminants responsible for dysfunction of the endocrine system<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moreover, a small animal veterinarian explained that in young cats there is a disease called <strong>fibroadenomatous hyperplasia<\/strong> that makes the mammary glands swell quite significantly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Puzzle finally resolved<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_2580\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2580\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2580\" src=\"https:\/\/m-e-e-r.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/ae134d1c10.jpg\" alt=\"(c) Cetacean Diagnostic Lab, IUSA-UL\" width=\"200\" height=\"70\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(c) Cetacean Diagnostic Lab, IUSA-UL<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally, our colleagues from the <strong>University of Las Palmas\/Gran Canaria (ULPGC)<\/strong> resolved the puzzle by describing a similar case they had a few years ago: A stranded spotted dolphin calf was necropsied and the ULPGC pathologists found the reason for the swelling to be a <strong>bacterial abscess<\/strong>, most probably caused by a (secondary) infection of a Phyllobotrium delfini <strong>cyst<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This infection could have been caused by an open wound, and the abscess apparently had grown exuberantly so as to cause an <strong>obstruction of the ureter<\/strong>, which in turn caused the death and the stranding of the animal.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>remaining question<\/strong> is now, why only young animals\/calves have been reported with these symptoms&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mysterious phenomenon La Gomera, October 2009.
