\"ecs\"<\/a>2nd ECS workshop on \u201eCommunicating marine mammal science to the general public\u201c<\/h1>\n

After the successful first workshop<\/strong> at the 27th ECS in Setubal we want to continue to share educational and outreaching experiences of communicating marine mammal science to schools and to the general public. These experiences can be educational programs that support school curricula, pedagogical outreach materials such as books, videos, kits, activities and exhibitions.<\/p>\n

The workshop is open to researchers, educators, science teachers, and to the media<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This year we want to focus on the theme of the conference: \u201cMarine mammals as sentinels of a changing environment<\/strong>\u201c. <\/p>\n

The objectives* of the workshop are to:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 share information about sources related to education;<\/p>\n

\u2022 exchange ideas and knowledge in new science teaching tools;<\/p>\n

\u2022 exchange experience in adressing the media;<\/p>\n

\u2022 foster general networking with all stakeholders;<\/p>\n

\u2022 exchange about the outreach of education<\/p>\n

\u2022 support ECS to address educational questions<\/p>\n

\u2022 encourage increased and improved use of social media tools.<\/p>\n

Schedule of the workshop<\/h2>\n

\"ECS_2013_setubal_1\"<\/a>2nd workshop on \u201eCommunicating marine mammal science to the general public\u201c<\/p>\n

In the morning session<\/strong> we want to give an input presenting different examples of projects that are marine mammal and education orientated also adressing the main topic \u201eMarine mammals as sentinels of a changing environment\u201c.<\/p>\n

The afternoon session<\/strong> will focus on the working groups that will be formed at the end of the morning session. The groups will be depending very much on the input of the participants as well as on the outcome of an web-base enquiry prior to the workshop.<\/p>\n

Arts and Science<\/strong> – \u201cUsing arts-science collaborations to communicate marine mammal science to the public\u201d, Paul Thompson, Susan Christie, Emma Dove, Mark Lyken & Stephen Hurre<\/p>\n

Museums and science communication:<\/strong><\/p>\n

” The role of Museums in communicating science: the example of the Madeira Whale Museum”, Lu\u00eds Freitas<\/p>\n

POSTER:<\/strong> “Education for Conservation”, Lisbon Zoo<\/p>\n

Investigation and education:<\/strong> “Slovenian Dolphin project \u2013 First hand experience to learn, care and protect”, Polona Kotnjek<\/p>\n
